Masks

Life can sometimes be little more than a masquerade
Where we parade in our elaborate intricate masks
Some so refined and adorned with such dazzling splendour
Dripping in jewels or crowned with such lavish finesse
Others with great artistry, paint themselves with radiant hues
A few even pump their faces with toxins for aesthetic, desired effect
Some wear veils or scarves to conceal and reveal little to none
Others orchestrate all-encompassing conjured smiles
A few have even disconnected their eyes from their souls

In our defence, it's because we wish to protect
But who...ourselves or the ones who perceive us?
I wonder, also, who we are trying to deceive?
The onlookers or indeed ourselves?

...'til then

Make love
to me in the
moonlight, as the yonder
lake's cool breeze caresses gently
our skin

Let me
see love's flames dance
reflected in your eyes,
as we lie illuminated
by fire

Then as
shadows cast, fade
and embers glow their last.
Hold me with your heart, mind and soul

...'til then

Wrong!

Within the belly of a
greed driven man, lies void of discontent
Yet grateful is a hungry
man... when he eats

Nightmare (crown cinquain)

Heavy
hooves thunder in
the small hours of the night
They echo furiously in
both her
head and
heart...nervously
awaiting his return
Her master; from which, she cannot,
dare not,
try hide
His wrath, she fears
He does demand her will
She is his servant to control;
command
Locked up,
imprisoned in
castle of their once love
Their love tainted by jealousy
...his fear
Dream lifts
she's awakened
feverishly she stirs
She knows this nightmare will return
again

Humbled

Oh what it is to really live
To feel morning due under foot
To feel wind whisper through hair
To feel the sun kissing your skin
To be enveloped by birdsong

Oh how it feels to be alive
To taste freshly picked fruit from source
To taste the kiss of a lover
To taste words of kindred other
To bask in the light of the moon

Oh how it tastes to eat, when hungry
To see the hues of Autumn fall
To see new life take its first breath
To see love shine in another's eyes
To see someone succeed at last

Oh how life looks when you are loved
To hear the sea calling your name
To hear the laughter of children
To hear a new-born child's first cry
To hear words you so long to hear

'Blessed are those who see
beautiful things in humble places
where other people see nothing'

Wishing

A beauty... apparently
A carcass... she feels
Starved of love, awe and hope
Yearning for a kindred other
If only to share the stars
A dreamer, idealist... perhaps
But it is the only way she knows
Her soul it doth reflect the light within
Her heart it whispers... yearns for love's solace

Burnt (For C.)

Momma always said not to look into the eyes of the sun
But from her wisdom I did not glean; a free sprit was I
Naïve, petulant child; dreams too big; impulsive - loaded gun
I ran with the flamboyant, the crazies; the ones with an edge
No fear, or thought of consequence, partook in misdemeanours
My life would be like the movies; never once thought I'd be dead
Golden brown, came part of the package; the next step, the great high
I was indestructible; this was freedom, this to me shined
........quickly burnt up by the sun for looking too long at the sky!

Old Quarry Town

Old Quarry Town

the trains long since gone
surrounded by shut quarries
- time it chips away

I never met you
great granddad the quarry man
- the stone still remains

he fell to his death
working at the quarry's edge
- a story passed down

stone house I frequent
rock quarried by ancestors
- comforting echoes

Perplexed

Too long I have stood on this gnarly, rickety old bridge
Procrastinating, contemplating the ifs, buts and whys
Oh how I envy the clouds, with no predestined direction
No left or right turns or crossroads, just vast endless sky
To my right lies the tawny weathered field, devoid of hope
A stark reminder of dreams left fallow, withered and unkempt
To the left, sweet aroma of lush grass; enticing me to elope
Fresh blades sway hypnotically, evoking a sense of freedom
The bridge beckons before me, the obvious straight route to take
Just one foot in front of the other, no need to seek wisdom
And yet I'm still stood here; stuck, rooted, frozen.... perplexed!

Magpies (haiku)

Audrey's Meadow of Dreams

Finally, she's alone at last
She's escaped required duties
Freeing braid from hair, it cascades
Thick auburn heedless tresses hang
over her shoulders like a cape

She throws herself onto the grass,
lush emerald green; cushions fall
Oh how she wishes she could lie
here forever; just be herself
Making friends with faces in clouds
Dreaming of adventures to come

Why must she have been born a girl?
Why are insects, reptiles, taboo?
Why is climbing trees forbidden?
Couldn't they see she was different?

An explorer she wishes to be
To sail the treacherous vast sea
and discover new lands, species

She wants rich soil beneath her nails;
not to be pristine, manicured
Her taffeta dress; it strangles
Its bodice, neckline, feels restrained

At least here, in serene meadow,
she is free; her eyes blazing blue
with trapped tears of unfulfilled dreams

Peddler of the Moon

can't believe I fell for it
Or for you for that matter
I mean, how blind was I not to see
What was I expecting from an encounter online
Naive or what; stupid and reckless also
How did I know who was actually sat on the other side of the screen
Why on earth did I let my guard down
Did I actually delude myself that you were interested in me
I may as well have had desperate or lost tattooed across my profile
I swear, I felt your words reach through the screen and shake my soul
Or was that your line....oh I forget now; it matters not

Your flattery and banter became more desired, more needed
Your attention, the highlight of my overshadowed reality
Your poems, first responses to my own, came thick and fast
Each one filled with more undertones of love and innuendos
Passion flowed through your words cascading over my body and soul
You had become my muse and I yours
Our conversations spun golden in verse
You became my first and last thought ......I fevered for you
You confessed to feeling it too; your term was "kindred souls"
A connection which, you said, you'd never known the like
I fell deeper, insatiably, with sheer abandonment of sense
My inhibitions and pride melted more with every lingering word, sent

Without warning, your words grew sparse
I could see your attention drifting elsewhere
The tides had turned; waves of doubt crashed down and I was left marooned
Drowning in quick sand of imagined, bitter-sweet dreamed-up love
Your words, once penned for me, scribed now a different tune to ring in another's ear
The empty message box became a deafening void of echoes of your once soul quenching words
My bubble burst; my sense restored, even in the twilight, all was clear
What a romantic fool I'd been to believe
A poet, armed with a merchant's patter, enough to defy the gods
Words slipping off your silvered fingers; pages and pages of fabricated fiction
I should have known there was no rhyme, in truth, no reason
Anyway; I remain unscathed as, after all, it was never even real
No damage actually done; no tryst, as such, had even occurred
So I slipped away, unnoticed, leaving you to continue to peddle the moon
To some other lonely dreamer or, should I say, another word-blinded poetic fool!
